AMG Corporate Offices introduces our Tenant of the Month: James Kutten from James Kutten Law Office.
o What is your profession and why did you choose it? I am a solo practice lawyer specializing in federal tax controversy matters. I help individuals and organizations solve their tax problems. For thirty-years I was a senior attorney with the Office of Chief Counsel Internal Revenue Service where I pretty much did it all for the IRS, as their lawyer. On a daily basis I advised revenue agents (auditor), revenue officers (collection), special agents (criminal investigation), and appeals officers (administrative appeal). I also litigated cases in the United States Tax Court, representing the IRS in court. At the end of 2011 I retired as a counsel for the IRS. In late 2011 I had to decide, what do I want to do upon retirement? I have a unique skill set, knowing the IRS from the inside, as their lawyer. I decided I would help people solve their IRS problems. The next decision, should I work for a firm or myself. My wife said, you worked your entire life for someone else, why don’t you work for yourself. So, it was decided, I will work for myself. The IRS can be a bully. I even the playing field. Have done a lot of good for clients, obtaining unbelievable settlements. But I do not have a magic wand. o What might someone be surprised to know about you? I co-teach Federal Tax Procedure at Washington University Law School. o Do you have a hobby, play a sport, or have any special interests? I enjoy outside activities, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and bicycle trail riding. o What job would you be terrible at? Everything and anything else. o Where is the most interesting place you have visited? Every trip is an adventure. I have enjoyed sailing in the British Virgin Islands and the Caribbean. Last summer I took a one-week white water rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. o Do you have any advice based on your area of expertise? Do not let the government push you around. o If you could work anywhere in the world, where would you choose? Right here. o What is your favorite restaurant from the St. Louis area? I enjoy ethnic restaurants. I am not a meat and potatoes person. o What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? Travel to unique locations. One day a music festival in Cuba will be on my travel list. o Who’s your go to band or artist when you can’t decide on something to listen to? I always enjoy the Blues.
